About Me

My name is April and it’s nice to meet you. I was born in Australia, raised around the world, now call Singapore home, and currently live in Chicago.

I graduated in 2011 with a degree in architecture, and then spent the next six years or so in Asia. Assimilation was quite the adjustment, and a timely reminder of an apparent disconnect from my own ethnicity. I’m well desensitized now, and my West-East infusion serves me well when necessary.

I am currently a master’s candidate at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, specializing in Business and Technology. These sectors are changing the world, and alongside, every business related story has a socioeconomic consequence that is of great interest to me. Having largely worked in finance since graduation, transitioning careers via this specialization is a natural progression. I am also particularly interested in computational journalism – it’s amazing how powerful programs such as Python are for journalism.

School aside, having the opportunity to live around the world has taught me so much, and my unique perspective is something that I really value about myself. It has graced me with sensitivity and compassion towards those who are suffering from deeply systemic and institutionalized injustices, and some of my reflections are included here in my pages.

I hope you enjoy.
